What are heavy metals?

Lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury are naturally occurring elements, although mining, manufacturing, pollution and other human activity can increase their presence in the environment. Plants and animals may take them up from soil, water and air, allowing trace amounts to enter food and product ingredients.

Why they matter

Potential harm depends on the specific element, chemical form, amount, route and duration of exposure. Age and health circumstances also matter. FDA gives particular attention to reducing exposure to lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury in foods commonly eaten by babies and young children because early development can be especially sensitive.

Heavy metals in food

These elements may enter food where crops are grown, animals are raised or products are processed. Their presence does not necessarily mean that a manufacturer intentionally added them. FDA conducts routine surveillance and targeted testing to monitor the food supply and support guidance or enforcement when needed.

Heavy metals in cosmetics

Cosmetic raw materials can contain trace elemental impurities. FDA has surveyed cosmetics for arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, lead, mercury and nickel. FDA reported that the amounts found in its surveys were mostly very small and did not indicate a health risk at those measured levels.

Detection is not the same as dangerous exposure

Modern laboratories can detect extremely small quantities. A responsible discussion must report the measured concentration, test method, product use and relevant health standard. Simply stating that a substance was detected does not establish that the exposure is harmful.

Supplements and concentrated products

Dietary supplements may contain botanicals, minerals or other concentrated ingredients. Product quality, sourcing and manufacturing controls matter. An ingredient list shows what is declared, but it cannot establish purity or confirm the concentration of an unintended contaminant.

Pet food and pet products

Animal food can also be affected by trace elements, pesticides, mycotoxins and other contaminants. The FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine monitors chemical contaminants in animal food. Pet owners should also follow official recalls and contact a veterinarian when illness is suspected.

Why labels may not list metals

Ingredient labels generally identify substances intentionally used to make a product. An environmental or manufacturing contaminant may be unintended and therefore absent from the ingredient list. Not listed is not laboratory proof that a contaminant is absent.

Can HealthLogic detect heavy metals?

No. A barcode scan cannot measure lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury or another contaminant. Reliable measurement requires appropriate product sampling, validated laboratory methods and interpretation of the resulting concentration.
