What pet-food labels can tell you
Pet-food labels identify declared ingredients and provide feeding, product and nutrition information. Ingredients may include meat, poultry, grains, fats, vitamins, minerals, flavors, preservatives and processing aids. The label is an important starting point, but it is not a complete laboratory report.
Ingredient familiarity does not prove quality
A familiar-sounding ingredient is not automatically better, and a technical nutrient name is not automatically harmful. Vitamins, minerals and preservatives can serve important purposes. A pets species, age, life stage, medical history and total nutrient intake matter more than marketing language alone.
Look beyond the first ingredient
Focusing only on the first ingredient can ignore the overall formula. The full ingredient list, nutrient information, feeding directions and suitability for the individual animal all deserve attention.
Food allergies and intolerances in pets
Pets can react to food ingredients, but symptoms such as itching, vomiting or diarrhea can have many causes. An ingredient scanner cannot diagnose a food allergy. A veterinarian may recommend a controlled elimination diet or other evaluation based on the animals history.
Why product identity matters
Brand, product name, package size, lot code and best-by date become especially important during a recall. Keep the original packaging when a pet becomes ill so the exact product can be identified and reported.
Contaminants may not appear as ingredients
Animal food can be affected by harmful bacteria, mycotoxins, pesticides, dioxins, trace elements or foreign material. These may be unintended contaminants rather than ingredients added to the formula, so the ingredient list may not disclose them.
Raw pet-food risks
FDA testing has found raw pet food more likely than other tested pet-food types to contain disease-causing bacteria. Contaminated food can affect pets and may expose people through hands, bowls, utensils and household surfaces.
Mycotoxins and chemical contaminants
Mycotoxins are produced by certain molds and can contaminate agricultural ingredients. FDA also monitors pesticides, industrial chemicals and trace elements in animal food. Confirming contamination requires proper sampling and laboratory testing.
Check official recalls
A barcode may help identify a product, but recalls are often limited to particular lot codes, manufacturing dates or package sizes. Compare the complete package information with official FDA recall notices.
