Why pesticides are used

Pesticides help control insects, weeds, fungi and other organisms that can damage crops or stored food. Different pesticides have different toxicological properties, approved uses and legal limits. Treating every pesticide as identical prevents consumers from understanding the real evidence.

What is a pesticide residue?

A residue is a small amount of a pesticide or its breakdown products that may remain in or on food. Detecting a residue does not automatically mean that a food is unsafe. The identity of the pesticide, measured amount, frequency of exposure and individual susceptibility all affect risk.

How pesticide tolerances work

The Environmental Protection Agency sets maximum legal residue limits, called tolerances, for pesticides used on food in the United States. EPA evaluates toxicity and expected dietary exposure before establishing a tolerance. Food containing residue above an applicable tolerance can be subject to enforcement action.

Legal does not mean invisible

Government monitoring and transparent testing still matter when residues comply with legal limits. Regulations can change as evidence develops. Consumers deserve accurate information about what was tested, what was detected, the concentration measured and how that amount compares with the relevant standard.

Organic does not mean pesticide-free

Organic agriculture restricts which substances and production methods may be used, but it does not guarantee that a product has zero pesticide residue. Organic and conventional products should both be discussed accurately rather than reduced to absolute safe or toxic labels.

Can washing remove pesticide residues?

Washing produce under running water can reduce dirt, bacteria and some surface residues, but it cannot guarantee removal of every pesticide. Some substances may be absorbed into the food. Peeling can remove additional surface residue, although it may also remove fiber and nutrients.

Practical ways to reduce exposure

Can HealthLogic detect pesticides?

No barcode scanner can directly test food for pesticide residue. A barcode identifies a product and connects it to available data. Measuring pesticide concentration requires appropriate sampling and laboratory analysis. HealthLogic will never claim that a phone scan performed a chemical test.
